Joyce G. Adkins Sloan
Services for Joyce G. Adkins Sloan, 89, of Grand Saline, were scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, June 24, 2016 at Bartley Funeral Home with Kyle White officiating.
Interment was held in Woodside Cemetery under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sloan passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2016, in Canton. Joyce was born on October 11, 1926, to Jule A. and Claudia G. Riggs Adkins. She was a member of the Grand Saline Church of Christ and a lifelong resident of Grand Saline. Joyce graduated 3rd in her class from Grand Saline High School in 1943. She attended Rutherford Business School in Dallas and obtained her first job at Moshee Steel Company on Maple Avenue in Dallas. She returned to Grand Saline where she volunteered with the Red Cross at the Old Fire Hall during World War II. Alongside other community members, she took part in welcoming and hosting some of the 2,000 British pilots who trained in Terrell during this time. After the war, she married returning Marine veteran Cecil Odell “Boley” Sloan. They had three children, Celia, Wayne and Lynne. Joyce owned and operated her own business, Merle Norman Cosmetics & Gift Galleria, Too, for 30+ years with locations in Canton and Grand Saline. She retired in 2011 and spent her time gardening. She was a member of “The Friends of the Old School.” She also loved to travel and was fortunate enough to visit many states and several foreign countries over the years.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, C.O. Boley Sloan, in 2001; her parents, Jule and Claudia Adkins; her brothers, Truman Adkins and Porter Adkins.
She is survived by her children, Celia, Wayne and Lynne; grandchildren, Ben, Celena and Krystal; great-grandchildren, Ty, Sloan and Jesse; brother, Bob Adkins; daughter-in-law, Sherry; son-in-law, David; grandson-in-law, Jamie; and two close family friends, Judy Stone and James Heflin.
Pallbearers were Wylie Garland, Danny Milam, Nick W. Adkins, Jeff Adkins, Seth Adkins, Ben Sloan, Phil Sloan and Roddy Sloan.
Honorary pallbearers were be Members of the Grand Saline Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial contributions to Woodside Cemetery or Creagleville Cemetery in Grand Saline.
The family received friends 6-8 p.m., Thursday, June 23, 2016, at the funeral home.
